Give your mind a springtime boost
Decision-fatigue is like willpower – it diminishes throughout the day if we don’t recharge properly. We asked our Mind & Body Specialist, Toby Maguire, about maintaining a happy and healthy mind, which after all governs the body and every decision we make. He suggests that it’s about time to clear out the junk that has collected on your grey matter over the winter months.
Toby believes that when we understand how the mind works, we can learn how to work with it rather than fight against it. To maintain a healthy mind, Toby recommends us to focus on three areas: concentration, consistency and cooperation.
Concentration is developed through mindfulness, learning how to observe and let go of negative thoughts without churning them over and over again in our mind. When we are mindful, we can let go of our fears and anxieties about the future, or regrets from the past, and realize that right here, right now is a very safe and pleasant place to be.
Consistency is achieved through clarity of your life’s purpose and goals. If you don’t know what you want out of life, how will you get to where you want to go? You will live your life like a ship stranded in a storm in the middle of the ocean at the mercy of the elements around you. When you are clear about your goals in life, you understand that every decision and choice you make on a daily basis will be in tune with your desired end result, making each day more meaningful and your daily decisions and choices easier to make.
Cooperation. We are constantly surrounded by other humans, so it is vital that we learn how to cooperate and live with them peacefully. Understand that humans are not like animals. When we see a lion, we know it is ferocious and dangerous. When we see a deer, we know it is meek and mild. But humans are more complicated. We expect others to fit in with our own ideals of how we believe a human should be, even though their experiences of life are completely different to ours. Accept others for who they are. Understand that we are all different. Spend more time working on your own imperfections, and less time on criticizing others.
Toby Maguire will be visiting Six Senses Douro Valley from May 1 to June 30, 2017 and Six Senses Spa Marbella from October 1 to 20, 2017.
